What Can I Tow?
The legality around towing a Trailer or Caravan changed from the 1st January 1997, if you passed your driving test prior to this then your licence permits to drive a vehicle and trailer combination of up to 8,250kg MAM. If you however passed your driving test on or after 1st January 1997 then your license permits you to drive a car and trailer combination up to 3500kg MAM. if you wish to drive a combination over this upto 7000kg then you will need to sit the B+E test.
MAM stands for 'Maximum Authorised Mass', this is where most get confused, this is the maximum weight of the car and the maximum weight of the trailer added together, the actual weight of the combination is irrelevant in this case. You can find these weights on the weight plates in your vehicle and on the Trailer/Caravan.
