Motoring 2 Day Driving School - Dsa Show Me, Tell Me Questions
At the beginning of your driving test you will be asked 2x questions, one which you have to show the examiner & the other were you tell the examiner, you cannot fail the test for getting the questions wrong but they do count as a fault in your driving test. Listen to the examiner carefully ensuring you hear if it's a show me or tell me question, also listen carefully as some questions are similar, here are the questions you could be asked:
Q1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Identify dipstick / oil level indicator (yellow dip stick in centre of engine, see below picture), describe how you would wipe the stick, place back in the engine, remove again and then check the oil level against the minimum / maximum markers.
Q2. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level. Answer
Identify engine coolant bottle (green cap bottom right, see below picture) and describe how the coolant level should be between the minimum & maximum level.
Q3. Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level. Answer
Identify reservoir (blue circular cap to bottom left of the engine bay, see below picture) and describe how the coolant level should be filled to the top
Q4. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid. Answer
Identify reservoir (white circular cap o top left of engine bay, see below picture) and describe how the brake fluid should be between the minimum & maximum level.

Q5. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey Answer
explain how pressure would be applied to the brake pedal, the pedal should feel firm, not spongy or slack.
Q6. Tell me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working (no need to exit the vehicle). Answer
identify the light swift & explain how you would walk around the car & check the lights.
Q7. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked. Answer
Tyre pressures can be found either in the manufacturers hand book or inside the drivers side door recess, pressures should be checked using a reliable pressure gauge applying to the valve when the tyres are cold.
Q8. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road. Answer
There should be no cuts or bulges in the side walls & the tread depth should be a minimum 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference.
Q9. Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey. Answer:
Start the vehicle, turn the steering wheel side to side explaining that the steering is light, not heavy.
Q10. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system. Answer
The abs warning light should illuminate when switching the ignition on, this should then de-illuminate after a couple of seconds, if it stays on then there is an issue.
Q11. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working. Answer
Apply hazard warning lights switch and check all indicators.
Q12. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only). Answer
Q13. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear, make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle. Answer
Demonstrate by releasing and then applying the handbrake and when it is fully applied it secures itself, explain that it should not be at the end of the working travel & should secure it self.
Q14. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers. Answer
Operate control to wash and wipe windscreen (turn ignition on to operate).
Q15. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens. Answer
Switch on ignition, press front screen button & rear screen button plus the A/C button, Knob on the left controls the temperature, the right controls the Fan, turn both up by turning to the right.
p.s. before setting of adjust the temperature to the desired temperature and then press the Auto button as per below.
Q16. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them. (No need to exit vehicle). Answer
Switch on dipped lights then rear fog light. Check warning light is on. Explain that you use when visibility is less than 100 meters.
Q17. Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car. Answer
Switch headlights to dipped then to main beam, check with main beam warning light (blue warning light).
Q18. Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this vehicle. (I can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on, please don’t start the engine). Answer
Operate brake pedal, ask examiner to help & check brake lights.
Q19. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash. Answer
The head restraint should be adjusted so the center of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. N.B. Some restraints might not be adjustable.
Remember your vehicle may have different controls so before setting off take 5 mins to learn the controls.
